I started skating in the Yorkshire city of Leeds in 1964 one Saturday morning. That particular morning the British Pair skating champions did an exhibition and I decided there and then that I wanted to be a pair skater. There were never enough boys to skate with back then so that didn't happen, but I was spotted by the 1963 European ice dance champion Michael Phillips who asked to take me for lessons and so I started skating. When I was 17 I was moved to London to train with the great Gladys Hogg OBE alongside other top names in British skating.
I had a very successful skating career of my own, representing GB in numerous international competitions and placing 3rd in the 1976 British Figure Skating Championships and 4th in the World Professional Championships in 1979. I achieved the highest accolade of Gold figure/freestyle Medallist in the UK and trained alongside Olympic champions Robin Cousins MBE and John Curry OBE in London.
I have been coaching figure skating and ice dance for 24 yrs. In 1979/80 I coached at Canterbury Olympic ice rink in Sydney, where I taught all levels of skaters before returning to the UK where I continued training students of all ages and levels from beginner to championship level. Whilst coaching at Bracknell in Berkshire I worked as Skating Director for 6 years during which time I organised and choreographed numerous ice shows and successful skating schools and summer camps, and also had the privilege of teaching the Princess’s Beatrice & Eugenie, the Queen’s granddaughters for a year.
During my time as an ISU and GB judge I have officiated at many internationals and Junior Grand Prix’s and I am fully trained in the new judging system which is used in ISU championships now. I also worked as a gymnastics coach for 5yrs, and as a qualified teaching assistant in a Primary school, supporting children with autism and various special needs.
I enjoy being creative and innovative, through my choreography, dancing, photography and designing and producing costumes If you have the time I have the patience to help you achieve your ambitions , however big or small.
